A while back we were asked to help a client who had built an off-the-shelf product that enabled anyone to get a website up and running quickly. To match with his requirements, we decided to use Clickfunnels. We had never used the product before but were keen to give it a go as it was the “in thing” at the time.

What we did not realize was just how “in thing” Clickfunnels would become. In case you’re wondering, here’s a short summary of what we went through to get things setup correctly:

The Setup Process Is Time-Consuming

We spent a ton of time setting up the Clickfunnels account and creating our pricing plan. To a non-tech person, this might sound simple enough but it took us about two days to complete. Why? Well, Clickfunnels makes you identify customers by giving you a unique identifying number (aka CID). This is so that it can track your leads and follow-ups. The process of getting this CID was complicated and involved us entering our credit card details three times before we could verify our email.

Once we had our CID, we could move onto the next step which was creating an affiliate program for marketers to promote our client’s product. Having an affiliate program involves you setting up a special link (e.g. www.myproduct.com/?affiliate=1) that people can click on to receive free products. When a customer clicks on this link and purchases a product that is relevant to the blog post, the affiliate will receive a small commission.

You Need An Agency To Get Things Going

As a startup company, we did not have the luxury of time to spare to undertake this process ourselves. We enlisted the help of a web agency who had extensive knowledge of Clickfunnels and who had previously developed a business using the platform.

It took another two days for the agency to get everything setup correctly and they helped us test various landing page ideas and provided guidance on how to improve conversions.

Doing Things The Right Way Vs. Cutting Costs

As a startup with a small budget, we had to be smart about how we did things. We needed to find the most efficient routes to get the job done and did not want to waste any money on inefficient processes. One of the things we needed to consider was the position of the button on our web page. We knew that we wanted to place the button in the center of the page as this is where the click happens. However, this requires you to use the advanced layout settings within Clickfunnels which means it will cost you.

One of the great things about Clickfunnels is that it gives you the freedom to choose any template you like for your website. Most websites are built using templates that are suitable for displaying large images and having large typographic elements. In these templates, the button usually appears at the end of the page or on the right side of the screen.

If you are using a more basic template, you can usually move the button to the center by doing the following:

  • Go to the dashboard
  • Scroll down to the footer
  • Locate the JavaScript area
  • Click on the edit button
  • Choose the layout you want (center) for the button

After you do this, you will need to go back to your landing page and edit it to reflect the new position of the button. This is something you should not do if you are doing things manually as there’s a chance you might make a mistake and break your site.

The Result

Since we implemented the changes, our conversion rate on the site has increased by about 20%. To us, this is well worth the two days it took to get it setup correctly. We are now enjoying the benefits of having a properly positioned button on our site.

One thing to consider if you are looking to use Clickfunnels is what your target audience is like. If you are a startup that is trying to reach younger audiences, you should probably avoid using overly complex templates as these will deter potential customers. Instead, use a more basic structure.

If you are looking for a tool to create a simple landing page for free, we recommend checking out Clickfunnels. However, if you are looking to create a fully-fledged website, we suggest looking into other platforms as this could be a costly process.
