Have you ever wanted to create a website but didn’t have the time or the know-how? You’re in luck because we have you covered on this front. In today’s article, we will briefly go over how you can make a basic website in under five minutes.
Get A Domain Name
Before you start building your website, you will need to secure a domain name to use. You can get a free domain name from any of the big name registrars like GoDaddy or WordPress.com (not personally recommended).
You’ll also need to decide whether you want to build a basic SEO-friendly website, or if you want to take the extra step and secure SEO optimization for your domain name (more on this below).
Pick A Theme
Once you have your domain name and you’re ready to build your website, you can start by selecting a WordPress theme. There are tons of free themes available online that you can use, or you can purchase a premium theme if you’re feeling extra creative. Don’t worry; we’ll discuss more advanced options below too.
Installing WordPress is fairly simple. You can use several tools to do it automatically for you, like WordPress’ very own plugin called WordPress Easy Install. If you aren’t much of a technological guru, you can also use Softaculous to install WordPress like a charm. The choice is yours. You can also read our comprehensive guide to WordPress installation if you want to learn more.
Add Some Content
The next step is to add some content to your site. You can use several blogging tools to easily add content to your site. Some of the most popular ones are: WordPress, Joomla, and Squarespace. Don’t worry; we’ll get into more detail below too.
Design Your Site
Once you have content on your site, you can start designing it. There are several free tools like WordPress’ built-in HTML editor that can be used to build your website. You can also use a tool like Squarespace which provides you with a fully functioning website in a matter of minutes. Or you can use a service like Wix which allows you to build a website with all the features you need in under 10 minutes. Designing your site is fairly easy and can be done using any of the above-mentioned tools or websites. You’ll just need to decide what kind of website you want to build (SEO-friendly or SEO-optimized) and what kind of content you want to put on it. If you’re looking for a free option, you can also use Google’s free website builder, Google Web Designer.
SEO-Optimize Your Site
Once you have your site ready to go live, you might want to take the time to optimize it for the search engines. This is called Search Engine Optimization, or SEO for short. There are several steps you can take to optimize your site. First, you will want to secure all your site’s URLs (Uniform Resource Locators or web addresses) so that they’re easily discoverable by search engines. You can do this by adding a robots.txt file to your site containing all the search engines you want to allow to crawl your site. You can also use your site’s privacy settings to restrict the amount of data that can be collected by third parties (like search engines) about your site’s visitors.
Launch Your Site
Once everything is set up, it’s time to launch your site. Just visit it directly via your web browser and you should see the default WordPress homepage with some content. If you want, you can also use WordPress to create a blog post about your new site and then you can submit it to the search engines to have your site ranked higher in the search results.
That’s pretty much everything you need to know to make a basic website. As you can see, it only takes a matter of minutes to get up and running with a simple WordPress installation. From there, you can add content, design your site, and optimize it for the search engines.
