How does it work?

When you set up a sales funnel, you start with the goal of attracting potential customers to your website. When they visit your site, they usually have a goal, as well. For example, they might want to purchase a product or service or make a booking. During their visit, they scroll through a series of landing pages, which encourage them to engage further. When they do, they are often presented with a form, often called a “conversion” or “acquisition” form, that they need to fill out in order to make a purchase or booking. This form might ask for their email address, contact details, or even a credit card number. As they fill out this form, the data is often collected by an email marketing service, such as MailChimp. When a form is completed, customers are often presented with a thank you page, reiterating the value proposition on which their visit was based. This is also the place where the customer’s email is often collected. When they see this page, they know they’ve been successfully served and their email is often put into a special folder, called a “conversion” folder, within the email marketing service. After the form is submitted, a person or automated software checks the form for completeness and then follows up with the customer, usually by phone or email. In the case of a webinar or product purchase, the funnels might be a little different, as there is usually more than one funnel leading up to the conversion. On the basis of a purchase, a customer might visit your website, then your Facebook store, and then make a booking with you or a call to action to get in touch. Depending on your industry, your customers might visit several different websites and apps along the way. For example, a customer who visits your website to research a product might then visit another website, whereupon they make a purchase. In each case, the goal is to get them as close to the conversion as possible and then, hopefully, into a happy customer who continues to grow your business.
