Since its inception, PayPal has maintained a singular focus on e-commerce, online marketplaces, and billing, and it continues to hold a stronghold in those industries. If you run a business that relies heavily on online transactions, PayPal is a company you should consider integrating with.

What makes PayPal so suitable for businesses is its broad acceptance. The company boasts that its payments solution is accepted by most major e-commerce platforms, including Shopify, WooCommerce, and Magento — not to mention the more than 500,000 websites directly using the company’s payment solution. Moreover, since PayPal is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The New York Times Company, any business or individual that uses its services can rest assured that their transactions will be protected by one of the most powerful media companies in the world.

The Complexity Of PayPal Integration

Not all businesses will be able to take advantage of the broad acceptance PayPal offers. After all, not all companies will be able to afford the hefty price tag of becoming an approved payments provider. The good news is that even if you can’t afford PayPal officially, you can still integrate its many functionalities into your website without needing a payment provider’s approval.

To keep things simple, let’s look at the process of integrating a simple PayPal button on a website that doesn’t already have one. We’ll use the Shopify platform for our example, but the process is much the same if you’re using WooCommerce or Magento.

In case you’re wondering, Shopify is a multi-purpose commerce hosting platform that’s widely used for e-commerce websites, marketplaces, and social media platforms. The service is owned by TechCrunch‘s parent company, CrunchFund, and it has more than 400,000 businesses using its platform, including some of the most recognizable brands globally.

To begin, navigate to your Shopify dashboard and click on the Setting icon in the top right corner.

Then, click on the Integrations tab. You’ll see a long list of options there, including PayPal. If you scroll down, you’ll discover a variety of integrations with tools, apps, and plugins that can help with various aspects of your business. You can integrate PayPal (and over 20 other options) with your Shopify dashboard.

Once you’ve integrated PayPal with your Shopify account, you can use the service’s many features to your advantage. For instance, you can create a quick PayPal button that will allow your users to make online payments with their credit cards or PayPal accounts. All you need to do is follow these easy steps:

1. Create a PayPal button.

To create a PayPal button, you first need to visit the company’s website and create a free account. Then, on the left side of the homepage, click on the Create a PayPal button. A new tab will open, and you’ll see a form with a variety of payment options. You can choose Credit Card or PayPal as your preferred method of payment, and you can opt to verify your account with a phone number or email address. Finally, you can set the amount you want to charge per transaction and click on the Create PayPal button. Your new PayPal button will now appear below your form.

You can click on the Edit button next to the PayPal button to make changes to your form. When you’re ready, just click on the Create button to confirm your changes and get your button ready to go.

2. Add the PayPal button to your website.

Now that you have a functional PayPal button, you can add it to your website. To do this, simply navigate back to your Shopify dashboard and click on the Tools icon in the top right corner. Here, you can choose to display your PayPal button on your website using a variety of methods including:

  • a simple <p>tag with <strong><span></strong><strong></span></strong></p>
  • a simple image of a PayPal logotype
  • styled text next to an image of a PayPal logotype
  • a button with a linked text and image of a PayPal logotype

When choosing which option to use, keep in mind that you can’t use any adverts, pop-ups, or anything that interferes with the simplicity and aesthetics of your website. Moreover, you shouldn’t use images of people in your design, as PayPal does not permit the use of real people in advertising material (with the exception of registered users who have supplied their photographs for commercial purposes)

For simplicity’s sake, we’ll use the first method and add our PayPal button to our website using a simple <p>tag with <strong><span></strong><strong></span><strong></strong></p>

This is merely a suggestion, and you can use the other methods listed above to display your PayPal button if you prefer.

3. Test the PayPal button.

Once you’ve added your PayPal button to your website, you can test how it works. To do this, you can either click on the Buy now link or PayPal button to make a purchase, or you can type in a URL for a product that you think suits your niche and click on the Search button. Your product will be displayed, and you can either click on the Add to cart button to add it to your shopping cart, or you can click on the View cart button to see your items. If you selected PayPal, you’ll see a purple box with the company’s name and logo as footer text. On the right side of the screen, you’ll see a horizontal tab that contains a variety of payment information. If you prefer to use your Credit Card, you’ll see a similar tab with the card’s logos instead.

If you’re not sure whether or not your PayPal button is functioning correctly, you can always click on the Get Help button, which will take you to the company’s website and direct you to their customer service. You can also contact PayPal directly through their website if you’re not satisfied with the help offered on their help pages.

4. Once approved, PayPal will notify you by email.
